Is Your Watch a Luxury Brand Name or Fake?
Once we receive your watch, our appraisers will inspect the watch looking for characteristics to confirm its authenticity. Majority of luxury watches and designer watches will come with a certificate of authenticity, so please include all original paperwork, boxes and receipts.
To verify authenticity, we look for the following things:
Movement
The main characteristic in determining if a watch is genuine or not is the movement. Our experts examine the internal mechanisms to determine whether or not your watch is real or a reproduction. A common example of this characteristic is with Rolex’s. Rolex watches are made with a “sweeping hand” movement - which essentially means its movement is smooth. If you see a Rolex and the second hand is ticking its way through the face, then it is not a genuine Rolex watch.
Material
Watches that use real gold should have a hallmark. We always use our XRF or other testing technology to determine and confirm that the purity content is accurate.
Weight
Counterfeit watches are usually made with cheaper materials, and as such, will be lighter than the original models.
Typefaces and Markings
Well known watch manufacturers use telltale signs when designed the shape and size of the typeface used on their watches. Spelling errors are one of the easiest ways to spot a counterfeit.
Serial Number
Serial numbers are also used to authenticate the timepiece. Each designer will have specific serial number for each type and style of watch they sell – and the serial will tell you if it matches the correct time period
Sound
Cheaper watches and counterfeits tend to have a ticking sound, unlike the authentic counterparts. High value watches have extremely smooth mechanisms, so there won't be a sound.
Regardless of the movement, we accept all luxury watches, designer watches and antique pocket watches - whether used, new or broken. Request a FREE Evaluation Kit today and sell your timepiece for its maximum value!
